hi this is charles hoskinson broadcasting live from warm sunny colorado always warm always sunny sometimes colorado so today we have some interesting twitter drama yay twitter drama what's up how's everybody doing with twitter you know uh yesterday i made a video and uh it was a video from the heart about a shooting incident that occurred in my community as many of you know i grew up in colorado and i went to university after fishing at metro state i went up to cu boulder and in particular i shopped at a king supers nearby university of colorado at boulder and i would go in at least two or three times a week sometimes more depending on class schedules it was really a part of my morning routine and that particular king supers uh there was a deranged gunman who showed up and just started killing people and shot 10 people including one police officer so i had heard there had been a shooting at a boulder king supers and literally as soon as i got home because it was a long day i went ahead and looked at the news and it was just unbelievable the devastation there so i made the video about it and you know really the point of the video was a discussion about empathy so i was saying okay well whatever you fit politically wherever you think about certain facts and circumstances about economics or mental health treatment we are in a situation where people are no longer able to understand each other uh people are having a lot of trouble relating to each other and having sympathy for uh things that happen and then true to form people on twitter completely ignored the video uh and then said the video was somehow connected to false promises with cardano or the falling price of ada or cardano's a ponzi scheme literally on a video about 10 people who died let's have an empathy experiment today after that shooting there's at least one dog sitting in an apartment waiting for its owner to come home hungry and it never happens let's pray that somebody finds that dog in time defeated before it starts to death after that shooting there's at least one husband who's at work not really having a different day just at work comes home and the kids aren't there the wife is not there because the wife was killed picking up groceries for dinner and wasn't able to go to school to pick up the children that happened yesterday wherever you sit in your pathetic lives for those who have been trolls about this whole situation wherever you sit and however confident that whatever you think about yourself understand that is the reality for some people today someone's parent had to be told about this someone's spouse had to be told about someone's children just found out about this several of the people who were murdered were in their 60s there's easter coming up people probably had family plans for easter now they're planning for a funeral that's where we're at my personal connection to it is i walked into that store two to three times every week for years of my life that very day that very time i was at whole foods a nearby supermarket buying coconut milk had my office been closer i would be at that king supers one of the people fleeing that's my personal connection and the response is that garbage so here's what i do if you attack me i don't give a [ __ ] i got a thick skin i don't care but if you have no empathy for these situations or belittle victims of a violent murder i rightfully so say go [ __ ] yourself and that's what i did then i see people members of for this moment the chain link community say this is an evidence that the cardano ponzi is unraveling with the unstable person at the top all because i tell somebody have some goddamn empathy for those who have died this is literally what social media has done to the human race and where we at how can we talk about the merits of cryptocurrencies how can we talk about how we should self-govern if every single thing we talk about is tribalism when moon when price appreciation you're not in my club so you're a bad person and we can't even understand when horrible things happen that we as human beings should come together and have a collective empathy where does this all go so here's what i did i sold the tweet the go [ __ ] yourself tweet to the very person who said these shameful and horrendous things and it's already at a thousand dollars and you know what if there's a gofundme or something for the victims of this crime wherever it goes i'll advertise it a little bit i'll go ahead and proportionately donate it to the 10 people who died of their families if i can't find a way to do that or no structure set up then i'll give it away as a kiva loan in their name and donate it but at the very least it's something that we can do to take our power back as an industry against this kind of behavior in these kinds of people it's not all right and it's not acceptable and we should not tolerate it and i don't want to be told to turn the other cheek this is not defending myself i've reached a point in my life where you can say whatever you want about me i does not care there are three books written about my history there's probably movies that are going to be made they're optioned already two of the three books written about the history of ethereum within the next three to five years it'll be something on netflix or something on hollywood you know i'm a villain or a hero depending on who you ask it's entertaining and it doesn't matter to me but what i do care about is when innocent people die there are victims of crimes there are people who are hurt who don't have a voice who didn't ask for this and when i'm calling for empathy for them if you disrupt that and come into that i'm not going to be a happy camper and i'm going to fight for them so shame on all of you who participated and dog piled on this thing and shame on you for not taking a moment back from the cryptocurrency space and having a little bit of humanity and every time these things happen i absolutely will say the exact same thing and i'll absolutely sell the tweet and we'll donate it at least that's something okay so those are some passing thoughts about this and in general i think it's just an indication of what social media has done i've said on multiple occasions including some whiteboard videos that i've made that i think that social media is toxic and i think that social media is turning people into toxic people i think the incentives for the way we communicate on platforms like twitter and facebook and reddit and so forth basically provoke people to act in character extreme versions of themselves and say things that are liable as slanderous and they would never say to a person to their face and if you don't believe that then you tell me how often have you shitposted at a funeral you're sitting there and someone has died and you stand up and just shout from the top of your lungs what you really think about the person in the casket or how somebody looks at the funeral you probably don't because you're a decent human being and social pressures prevent you from doing that now ask yourself this when someone dies and it's announced over twitter what do you see in the comments section the political opponents or the people who disagreed with that person do just that whether it be rush limbaugh or john lewis or pick your favorite or most hated political person that's what social media is doing to human discourse so the burdens of society and humanity moving to the future is how do we undo that and change the incentives and change the way we think about these things the way information flows and how do we have collective empathy and understanding and respect for each other and if we can't get there what will happen is it'll get worse and worse you'll probably see a lot more shootings a lot more conspiracy theories and eventually crying for help society will ask the government to solve the problem and how they do that is they just regulate all speech and they step in with a very heavy hand and they tell us what to do what to think and how to act i really don't want to live in that world and i think humanity is better than that and i think we have all the tools to be able to help each other and work with each other love each other understand each other and communicate proactively maybe i'm wrong but what's the consequence of being wrong is the alternative of well we're innately evil we're innately bad and we need to be controlled otherwise we'll just all club each other with stones i don't want to live in that world and i don't think you do either so again to the victims of this heinous horrible crime you have my empathy our hearts and prayers and i am truly sorry for everything you're going to go through over the next months and years and the loss that will never be recovered and to the people who mocked the victims of these heinous crimes and lack any empathy at all i'm truly sorry that that's where your heart is your life is and your place is and i hope that you find the courage to have some self-reflection and growth that gets you out of the things you do and say and to the rest of the people in the world let's find a way to grow together to a point where these things socially become less frequent and build better systems that disincentivize this type of behavior so that we can actually have better mediums of communication thanks so much
